MOSCOW, 17 Feb – RIA Novosti. State Duma deputy from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet did not rule out the return of the title of “Hero of Ukraine” to Stepan Bandera, but expressed the hope that the majority of Ukrainians would oppose this.
Earlier it was reported that the Lviv Regional Council appealed to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the Verkhovna Rada to return the title of “Hero of Ukraine” to Stepan Bandera.
“Everything is possible in Ukraine. This is not even surprising. We understand perfectly well that Bandera's ideology prevails in the leadership of Ukraine today … I hope that sensible Ukrainians will have their say. I am sure that there are more of them than such Bandera supporters who today they came to power. I am sure that they will make the right conclusions in the elections, and pro-Ukrainian, not pro-Western leaders will come to power, “Sheremet told RIA Novosti.
In December 2020, the Ternopil Regional Council in western Ukraine asked Zelensky to return the title of Hero of Ukraine to the leaders of Ukrainian nationalists Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych.
On August 2, 2011, the Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine upheld the decisions of the lower courts on the illegality of presidential decrees conferring the title “Hero of Ukraine” to Bandera – the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, one of the main initiators of the creation of the “Ukrainian Insurgent Army” * (UPA *) – and the former commander-in-chief of the UPA * Shukhevych. First, the court rejected the cassation appeals against the decision of the Donetsk Administrative Court of Appeal, adopted in April 2010 on the illegality of conferring the title on Shukhevych, filed by ex-President Viktor Yushchenko, who signed a decree on conferring this title on the former commander-in-chief of the UPA * in 2007, Shukhevych's son Yuri other citizens.
