KIEV, 17 Feb – RIA Novosti. The Lviv Regional Council appealed to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the Verkhovna Rada with an appeal to return the title of “Hero of Ukraine” to Stepan Bandera. “We, the deputies of the Lviv Regional Council, call on the President of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to amend the law of Ukraine” On State Awards of Ukraine “… regarding the possibility of assigning the status of “Hero of Ukraine” to persons who do not have or did not have the citizenship of Ukraine. We call on the President of Ukraine to grant Stepan Bandera the title of Hero of Ukraine, “the text of the appeal, which is posted on the website of the regional council, says.
The regional council also added that, in their opinion, the activity of Stepan Bandera “symbolizes an entire era of Ukraine's struggle for its independent conciliar state.”
In December 2020, the Ternopil Regional Council in western Ukraine also asked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to return the title of Hero of Ukraine to the leaders of Ukrainian nationalists Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych.
The Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine on August 2, 2011 upheld the decisions of the lower courts on the illegality of presidential decrees conferring the title “Hero of Ukraine” to Bandera – the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, one of the main initiators of the creation of the “Ukrainian Insurgent Army” * – and the former commander-in-chief of the UPA * Shukhevych. First, the court rejected cassation appeals against the decision of the Donetsk Administrative Court of Appeal, adopted in April 2010, on the illegality of conferring the title of Hero of Ukraine to Shukhevych, filed by ex-President Viktor Yushchenko, who signed a decree on conferring this title on the former commander-in-chief of the UPA * in 2007, by Shukhevych's son Yuri, and also a number of other citizens.
