SOCHI, February 16 – RIA Novosti. In Sochi, a meeting has begun between the delegations of the guarantors of the “Astana process” in Syria – Russia, Iran and Turkey, the RIA Novosti correspondent said.
International consultations will last two days.
In addition to the delegations of the guarantor countries, representatives of international organizations, including the UN and the ICRC, as well as delegations of the Syrian government and the opposition will take part in the negotiations.
As the Russian President's special envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev, reported, the agenda will include issues of political settlement, the fight against terrorism, the return of refugees, the search for missing persons and the economic situation in Syria.
Talks to resolve the situation in the SAR in the “Astana format” have been held since 2017. In January 2018, the Congress of the Syrian National Dialogue was held in Sochi, which was the first attempt since the beginning of the conflict to gather a wide range of participants at one negotiating platform. The main result of the congress was the decision to create a constitutional committee, which operates in Geneva and whose main task is to prepare a constitutional reform.
