MOSCOW, February 16 – RIA Novosti. The fire occurred in the technical premises of the Valaam Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, it is extinguished by employees of the local department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and volunteers, the abbot of the monastery, Bishop Trinity Pankraty, told RIA Novosti.
“The premises of the road workers are already on fire at 16 o'clock. The fire seems to be localized. There is no information about the victims yet,” Bishop Pankraty said.
Earlier in his Telegram channel, the bishop said that firefighters from the Valaam unit of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the voluntary fire brigade of the monastery and “reinforcements from Sortavala,” which arrived over the ice, were fighting the fire.
“The main thing is to prevent the spread of fire to the neighboring building” Vodoprovodny Dom “, which is an object of cultural heritage,” the abbot said.
The Transfiguration Valaam Monastery is located on the Valaam archipelago of Lake Ladoga. According to church tradition, the founders of the monastery, missionaries Sergius and German of Valaam, appeared here at the end of the 10th century. According to another version, the monastery was founded in the XIV century. At various times the Valaam archipelago was located on the territory of Russia, Sweden and Finland. In 1940, after the Soviet-Finnish war, it became the territory of the USSR and fell into disrepair. The revival of the monastery began in 1989, when six monks settled on the island.
Now the monastery is home to about 200 inhabitants. The monastery complex includes the main estate and 12 sketes. The stauropegic monastery is directly subordinate to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill. More than 100 thousand pilgrims and tourists visit the monastery every year.
