NIZHNY NOVGOROD, 15 Feb – RIA Novosti. The Nizhegorodsky district court found the former head of Mari El Leonid Markelov guilty of accepting a bribe on an especially large scale, the RIA Novosti correspondent reports from the courtroom.
He is also accused of abuse of office and illegal acquisition of weapons.
Since April 2019, hearings have been held in the Nizhegorodsky District Court: the prosecution asked to transfer them from Yoshkar-Ola so that the defendant could not use his connections in the republic.
Markelov headed Mari El from 2001 to 2017, in April 2017 he was detained.
The investigation believes that he received, through his confidant Natalya Kozhanova, more than 235 million rubles from the founder of the Akashevskaya factory, Nikolai Krivash. This was a reward for the transfer of five billion rubles to the company from the money allocated by the state for the development of local agriculture.
The court confiscated a shopping center, 16 cars, gold bars and other property from Markelov – only 2.2 billion rubles. The prosecutor requested 17 years in a strict regime colony, a fine of 235 million rubles, and deprivation of the right to hold leading positions for three years.
The former head of the republic does not admit his guilt.
