US accuses China of maintaining “repressive information regime”

WASHINGTON, 11 Feb – RIA Novosti. The United States “completely condemns” the ban in the PRC of broadcasting of the British public television and radio corporation BBC (BBC), introduced after the British authorities revoked the broadcasting license of the Chinese television channel, State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

“The PRC maintains one of the most controlled, most repressive, least free information regimes in the world,” Price said. According to him, the PRC uses freedom of speech in other countries “to spread disinformation.” The US is calling for free media access to the PRC market, Price added.

Earlier, the General Directorate of Radio and Television of China announced a ban on broadcasting BBC World News in the country “due to the systematic violation of requirements for reporting and undermining the national interests of the PRC.”

The BBC Television and Radio Corporation expressed disappointment with this decision.

Earlier this month, British media regulator Ofcom revoked the license of the Chinese TV channel CGTN for not complying with the requirements for a license holder. The US authorities did not condemn the British actions.
