Lukashenko instructs to discuss Belarus' refusal of neutrality

MINSK, 12 Feb – RIA Novosti. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed, following the results of the All-Belarusian People's Assembly (ANC), to discuss and outline possible amendments to the constitution related to the refusal of the republic from neutrality.

“A fundamental issue was raised (at the VNS – ed.), First of all, for the president. Different people emphasized – both military and non-military – proposing to constitutionally consolidate the principle opposite to neutrality. There is no neutrality and, to be honest, we did not pursue a course, which would be rigidly connected with neutrality, thereby, possibly, violating the constitution … Life changed, and we had to adapt to this life, believing that it is impossible to constantly change the constitution. Therefore, apparently, we need to discuss this issue with experts and explain – otherwise these requirements “, – said Lukashenko, summing up the results of the VNS.

At the same time, the head of state drew attention to the fact that before that Belarus also needed to adopt the concept of national security. “By discussing it, we will come to constitutional changes in this regard,” Lukashenka added.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei said that the striving for neutrality enshrined in the Constitution of Belarus does not correspond to the current situation, it is proposed to take this into account when working on amendments to the basic law of the country.
