WP: Russia may face global success due to Sputnik V vaccine

MOSCOW, 11 Feb – RIA Novosti. The Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine could bring global success to Russia, journalist Ishan Tarur writes in an article for the Washington Post.

According to him, until recently, talk about the Russian drug “caused ridicule.” However, last week the vaccine received strong support after the publication in the authoritative scientific publication Lancet of work with the results of the third phase of testing “Sputnik V” in volunteers. The work confirmed the drug's high safety and efficacy at 91.6 percent. “More than a dozen countries have approved the use of the vaccine, and this will continue with Lancet approval. Sputnik V is significantly cheaper than Western competing vaccines and does not require ultra-low temperature storage, which would complicate the distribution of the Pfizer drug in most developing countries, “Tarour said.

The journalist believes that this can bring victory to the Kremlin with “soft power.” In his opinion, this was preceded by a major national research strategy implemented in the country by President Vladimir Putin in recent years. “Perhaps the main prize, at least in terms of geopolitics, is Europe,” the publicist asserts.

The article says that members of the European Union are faced with a shortage of products and disruptions in procurement, as a result of which the countries of this organization lag behind the rates of vaccination of the population of the United States and Great Britain. The situation provokes interest in the Russian vaccine in the EU countries. The spread of coronavirus
