Turkey said it will not obey US demands to abandon the S-400

ANKARA, 10 Feb – RIA Novosti. Ankara does not intend to obey Washington's demands to abandon the S-400 air defense systems purchased from the Russian Federation, Ismail Safi, a member of the Security and Foreign Policy Council of the Turkish Presidential Administration, told RIA Novosti.

“So far, there is no agreement with the United States on the S-400. As a preliminary condition, they demand that the deployment of the complexes be abandoned. But Turkey is not going to accept such a condition. There is no talk of any refusal from the S-400, as well as of bargaining around them, even with taking into account the fact that we are excluded from the program for the production of the latest F-35 fighters, “- said the agency's source.

According to him, Turkey's goal is to produce its own air defense systems. “For us, this is a matter of national security. Of course, since we are in NATO, it is natural to expect that we can get what we need from our allies. But they did not pass the test of sincerity, which is why we agreed with Russia, and she sincerely showed us her friendship We are continuing negotiations with Russia on the supply of a new batch of S-400, “Safi added.

Deliveries of the latest Russian S-400 air defense systems, which caused a crisis in Turkey's relations with the United States, began in mid-July 2019. Washington demanded to abandon the deal and purchase American Patriot systems in return, threatening to delay or even cancel the sale of the latest F-35 fighters to Turkey, as well as to impose sanctions in accordance with CAATSA (the Law on Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions).

Ankara refused to make concessions and continued negotiations on an additional batch of S-400. According to Maria Zakharova, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, the US sanctions against Turkey in connection with the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems once again show Washington's inability to compete fairly.
