Spiegel predicted ruins in Europe in case of shutdown of Nord Stream 2

MOSCOW, February 10 – RIA Novosti. The German magazine Der Spiegel published an article in which it analyzed the possible consequences of pressure on the Nord Stream 2 project.

Thus, the author of the article is convinced that Germany will harm itself if it refuses to build the gas pipeline, and the stoppage of laying will lead to the fact that ruins of pipes will remain in Europe.

“If we assume that Nord Stream 2 will not be completed, then we will have to deal with industrial ruins, which are not suitable even for a museum, because all the pipes are laid underground,” the article emphasizes.

The material also notes that the completion of the project is beneficial for the Europeans themselves. The author recalls that the alternative to Russian gas is, in particular, American. Germany's refusal from Nord Stream 2, according to the article, is inexpedient primarily for economic reasons, and the sanctions imposed by the American side on the companies participating in the project are dictated by the desire to promote its own gas to the EU.

“Citizens would pay more money for gas from other sources. For example, expensive gas from the United States, produced by hydraulic fracturing, which destroys entire tracts of land in the United States. In addition, the United States ruined its reputation in the European Union,” – the text says.

The author believes that in the situation with Nord Stream 2, Germany should shift its focus from the “moral and economic” sides of the issue to specific countries whose interests are affected by the project in one way or another.

“The question is not whether Nord Stream 2 needs to be completed, but rather whether the interests of different countries should be taken into account,” he sums up, without listing specific states.

Following the results of the previous plenary session, the deputies of the European Parliament adopted by a majority vote a resolution in connection with the case of Alexei Navalny, in which they demanded that the European Union “immediately impede the completion of the Nord Stream 2 project, as well as” sensibly strengthen “restrictive measures against Russia. key countries, including Germany and Austria, partners in the construction of Nord Stream 2, insisted on the need to separately consider the situation with Navalny and the construction of the pipeline. The German side has also repeatedly stressed that the project is economic in nature and should be implemented. Moscow has also been repeatedly noted that the construction of the pipeline meets the interests of European consumers and pursues purely economic goals.
