MOSCOW, 8 Feb – RIA Novosti. The Moscow City Court recognized as lawful the arrest of former schema-abbot Sergius (Nikolai Romanov), accused of inducing suicide and violating the right to freedom of religion, the press service of the court told RIA Novosti.
“The court upheld the decision to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention unchanged,” the press service said.
Thus, the court dismissed the appeal of his defense, which asked to release Sergiy from the pre-trial detention center.
The spiritual father and founder of the Sredneuralsky nunnery, Sergiy, became the focus of attention after he began to speak in sermons that COVID-19 is a “pseudo-pandemic” that Russians want to be placed in the “electronic camp of Satan”, “they are illegally imprisoned in self-isolation,” freedom and work “. Subsequently, the ecclesiastical court defrocked him, but he continued to hold services and speak publicly in violation of the prohibition of the ruling bishop, in connection with which he was excommunicated in September.
The former schema-abbot was detained on the night of December 29 in the Sredneuralsky nunnery during the assault of riot police, after interrogation he was taken to Moscow from Yekaterinburg. The Basmanny Court in Moscow on the same day arrested Romanov for two months. The former monk is accused under articles of inducement to suicide, violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion and arbitrariness (part 3 of article 110.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, part 3 of article 148 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, paragraphs “c”, “e” of part 1, article 330 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
Later, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation announced the initiation of criminal cases on torture of children on the territory of the monastery (paragraphs “a”, “d” of part 2 of Article 117 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and the negligence of local prevention authorities (part 1 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to the ministry, Sergius already has a conviction for murder and robbery.
