WASHINGTON, 8 Feb – RIA Novosti. US President Joe Biden did not explicitly state that the US would not ease sanctions until Iran returns first to comply with the terms of the JCPOA, but further discussions are possible only after that, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Monday.
On the eve of Biden, on the air of the CBS television channel, he replied in the affirmative that the United States would not be the first to lift sanctions on Iran in order to return Iran to the negotiating table on a nuclear deal. After that, he nodded in the affirmative as the host clarified whether Tehran should first stop enriching uranium.
“Let's be clear. The president never said it verbatim. It was said by the interviewer, Nora O'Donnell, who was interviewing. And he didn't answer the question,” she told reporters.
In response to the journalist's remark that Biden nodded in the affirmative in response to this question, Psaki said that the White House, if a new approach to Iran was announced, “would do more than a nod of the head.” “But in general, his position remains the same: if Iran returns to full compliance with its JCPOA commitments, the United States will do the same and then use it as a platform to build a broader and more substantive agreement that will also address other areas of concern, ”Psaki said.
She assured that this will be done with the participation of partners in the “5 + 1” format.
“His (Biden's) position and the position of our national security team, the position that he is discussing with our partners, is that Iran should decide the issue of returning to full implementation of its obligations under the JCPOA, and at this moment it will be possible to continue the discussion further.” – said a spokeswoman for the White House.
