PRAGUE, 8 Feb – RIA Novosti. It's time for the Slovak government to begin negotiations with the Russian Federation on the supply of the Russian vaccine against the Sputnik V coronavirus to the republic, the leader of the Slovak National Party and ex-head of parliament Andrei Danko told reporters on Sunday.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Igor Matovic said, speaking on Slovak radio, that the republic could produce some vaccines against COVID-19, including Russia's Sputnik V. According to him, the Russian vaccine manufacturer is allegedly interested in this. At the same time, the prime minister added that if Slovakia began production of a vaccine against coronavirus, it would do it not only for itself, but also supply it to other EU countries. He is not going to produce Sputnik V in Slovakia, even if someone here wanted to. It is better to start negotiations with the Russian side on the supply of this vaccine here, “Danko said.
According to the ex-speaker, he is ready to actively help the prime minister in this matter.
During his tenure as head of parliament (2016-2020), Danko repeatedly visited Moscow at the invitation of his Russian colleagues and even made a speech in the State Duma in November 2017, for which he received condemnation from the right-wing parties in Slovakia. Danko actively supported the expansion of political, trade and economic relations between Slovakia and the Russian Federation.
“I believe that you will do everything to ensure that the Slovaks receive Sputnik V,” Danko stressed, addressing Prime Minister Matovic.
The scientific journal Lancet last week published the results of the third phase of clinical trials of “Sputnik V”, confirming the high efficacy and safety of the vaccine. During phase III clinical trials, Sputnik V demonstrated high rates of efficacy, immunogenicity and safety – the vaccine efficacy was 91.6%. The vaccine provides complete protection against severe cases of the new coronavirus infection.
