MOSCOW, February 7 – RIA Novosti. Donald Trump's allegations of fraud in the November 2020 presidential election, as well as the riots outside the Capitol building in Washington, cost American taxpayers $ 519 million, The Washington Post calculated.
As the authors of the material note, government agencies were forced to use additional budgetary funds to respond to the actions of Trump and his supporters. For example, costs included court fees on numerous claims, increased security for election officials, and restoration work following the storming of the congressional building.
According to the calculations of the publication, more than 480 million dollars were spent on the deployment of the National Guard troops in Washington until mid-March. Another 28 million was spent on security during the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden.
On January 6, supporters of Donald Trump, then still the current American leader, stormed the Capitol after a rally in Washington. Because of this, the work of the Congress, which discussed the election results, had to be interrupted for several hours. As a result of the riots, a demonstrator and a policeman were killed, and three more died from causes unrelated to violence. After law enforcement authorities removed the rioters from the congressional building, Congressmen confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the elections. Trump was soon impeached by the House of Representatives on charges of inciting mutiny.
