Canada to allocate funds to support civil society in Belarus

MOSCOW, February 7 – RIA Novosti. Canada will provide 2.25 million Canadian dollars ($ 1.76 million) to support civil society organizations in Belarus, according to a press release from Foreign Minister Mark Garneau.

“The Honorable Foreign Minister Mark Garneau announced today that Canada will provide 2.25 million Canadian dollars to support civil society organizations working to promote democracy in Belarus,” the press release said.

The report notes that it has previously announced the allocation of 600 thousand Canadian dollars (470,416 US dollars) to help civil society, in particular women and independent media.

Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that Germany has allocated about 21 million euros for the program to support the opposition in Belarus. As noted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the plan is aimed at providing asylum and scholarships, as well as supporting independent media.
